Hi Ladies! I’m back with my column and it’s my favourite time of year! I love the Autumn. I know the summer is fading but I just love that fresh feeling and colours that start to emerge both in nature and fashion! It’s the perfect time to start to add a layer or two to your outfits as there tends to be a nip in the air! This month I have picked out some lovely layering pieces that you can start adding to your wardrobe in time for when you need to put the heating on!

Layering

The poncho is a key piece. It is great for the day and night time. Choosing a light knit will allow you to layer up and not feel so bulky. September is often still mild but cooler in the evening, a poncho can help you keep stylish and warm at the same time.

Another layering piece is the Gilet. This can be a real key piece and provide a flattering shape. A dark gilet can draw attention to your waist whilst at the same time hide the tummy and bum. A gilet can be worn over a t-shirt, top or dress and is perfect for shopping in or wearing for the school run!

The key to layering is often getting the first layer right. Wearing a longer vest that is fitted will cover your bum and tummy and provide a basis on which to add a layer too. The great thing with wearing a longer vest is that you can wear any layer top even if its shorter as the vest will always cover any trouble bits. This longer lace trim vest just seen below the top is a winner for me as I tend to wear a short top over and have just the lace on show which gives a touch of glam to the outfit.

Another way of adding a layer is to invest in a new scarf, one which incorporates the autumn colours. A scarf is a great way of adding colour to your outfit as well as providing a bit of warm. I love this snood (combination of a hood and scarf) which has this seasons colours of tans, khakis and grey in it.

Dressed up for Autumn

The great thing about autumn is that more styles are available in longer sleeves, perfect for coverage and keeping out the cold! Whether you’re looking for a dress for day or night, now is the time that long sleeves will make a come back perfect for wearing now without the need of jacket or coat.

A jumper dress is a great style to invest in. It can be worn over leggings or opaque tights with ballet pumps or boots. This soft olive green dress is the perfect shade as it will go with brown or black shoes and being a light knit is not too bulky for September.

A must have for the autumn is definitely a shirt dress. Set to be the biggest trend, the shirt dress can be worn by any figure and any age. Worn as a dress or over skinny jeans, it’s versatile to wear day or night. This black pussy bow dress is classy and stylish. Great for wearing day or night and will never date.

As the season progresses there will be more dresses available for evening with a sleeve. The midi length dress is a great shape that sits just below the knee providing great coverage and now there is the introduction of the half length sleeve. This is the ideal length (think Kate Middleton) as it hides the top of the arms without being too hot.  A great shape on, this particular dress could be worn day or night, just depending on which shoes you wear with it.

Talking of shoes I have seen some great loafers in Clarks which are ideal to wear with dresses or jeans and a gilet. These are the ideal choice for now as they are practical, stylish and can be worked into your wardrobe easily

Question and Answer

I have a September wedding to go to and I'm not sure what to wear. I know it might be cooler but I don’t plan on wearing a jacket. Do you have any suggestions.

September weddings can be tricky as the weather is still mild but the fashion has somewhat changed to full autumn which is often too heavy for a September wedding. Luckily there are the dresses out there with sleeves which would be perfect as they will provide coverage without the need of a jacket. I would suggest sticking to navy, plum or pale grey with a colour added. This dress here is a great choice, its light but still has darkish tones to match up your accessories, plus it has a sleeve so is a winner all round!
